The Benefits of RSS and XML to increase Site Traffic
RSS...the Basics
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based
format for content distribution. News, information, enterprise applications
and weblogs (blogs) can all be published in RSS. When a new article
is posted or a change is made to an application, RSS feeds can automatically
notify the user.
Information Control
The big benefit of RSS is that individuals opt-in to content of
interest, totally controlling the flow of information that they
receive. If the quality of the content in the feed declines, users
simply remove the feed from their RSS reader or RSS Feed enabled
browser and they will not receive any additional updates from that
source. The RSS reader acts as an aggregator, allowing users to
view and scan multiple content streams in a timely fashion. As a
result an increasing number of websites are now using RSS
and XML technology to publish and share information to
a larger audience due to the ease of access for RSS configured information.
So what are the Benefits?
The benefits of configuring your News, Articles, Blog or Forum information
using RSS is enormous for both your website readers and your place
in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPS). With both Internet
Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox now integrating
RSS feeds direct into their web browsers, your readers can 'subscribe'
to your feeds and have all the feed information available at a click
of the mouse. Therefore making it easier for subscribers to access
new web content on your site via a simple drop down menu (see example
below of Mozilla Firefox).
Configuring your News, Articles, Blog information etc via RSS is
of great benefit to your listing in the SERPS of Google, Yahoo,
MSN etc, as the information is stored in one easy to access XML
file which when submitted is constantly resourced for new content
to add to their search databases. On top of this there are a multitude
of RSS Aggregators and RSS Feed Submissions
sites that love recieving new and exciting content to add to their
pages. By submitting your XML files your information is not only
shared to all the members of these websites and therefore accessible
by thousands, but their engines constantly poll your site for new
information, which results in added traffic.
