Combating SPAM
Help SPAM is ruining my life
Is the endless stream of SPAM emails getting you down? here are
some tips to help you combat these annoying messages from clogging
up your Inbox.
What is SPAM?
Spam emails are commercial electronic messages that have been sent
to you without your consent. Senders often attempt to buy, sell
or advertise goods, services, land, investment opportunities and
so on through spam. Spam, or electronic 'junk mail', has increased
so sharply in recent years that it is threatening the viability
of email. Spam messages are often fraudulent, offensive or annoying,
and they often carry viruses.
Spam not only clogs up your inbox with annoying, unwanted messages,
but also costs you time deleting them. And if the spam problem is
particularly bad, you may encounter increased costs because they
may chew up your monthly download allowance.
How do I combat SPAM?
Unfortunately once your email address has been compromised there
is usually little or no way to avoid getting spam emails, but don't
despair there are ways to minimise the impact of spam and its affects
on your Inbox.
1. Enable Anti-Spam measures with your Website Host or ISP
2. Configure your Email Programs Junk Mail Filter to exclude unwanted
emails
3. Purchasing SPAM Blocking software such as McAfee SpamKiller or
Norton AntiSPAM
While these measures will not reduce the amount of SPAM hitting
your email address, it will certainly assist in time taken to delete
the unwanted messages as they will be removed or 'Junked' prior
to downloading to your Inbox.
How it can be stopped
The Australian Government is committed to stopping SPAM and has
launched several websites which provide more information on SPAM
and ways to deal with the unwanted messages. They also have available
Add-in Software for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express to directly
report SPAM emails to the Australian Communications & Media
Authority.
